…@InsideHigherEd's newsletters come w/links for easy FB sharing…unless it slips through the memory hole, I post weekly and monthly newsletter not daily. Academe Today does not so it's blog, share from another FBer or nothing. That's not fair to IHE (bitching about the paywall not withstanding).

I've been accused of bad 'tude about about mainstream higher ed media. That depends on perspective. I want more speaking for ourselves, in our own voices and on our own platforms — but no throwing out any babies with media bathwater. Nor do I see any point in multiple daily posts of articles already posted on multiple groups and widely RT's. Plus, both show up regularly on Precarious Dispatches aggregation posts, CHE perhaps more frequently (suggesting a lingering print bias even on Google News).

So here's Monday's AcademeToday, adjunct proofed, as it were. Sure wish IHE did weekly and monthly reviews though..

… on @WH #HigherEd Summit & other important articles, too many #paywall/ed for most #adjuncts…unfortunately Peter Schmidt's article on adjunct organizing is one of them. Since the article is about municipal endorsements, you can probably find articles in local Boston area, and L.A. press. The good news is that Rich Moser's (already featured on Facebook at A new faculty majority and other pages is not. 

IHE makes this easier by publishing their daily newsletter online as well as a weekly and a monthly—subscribe by email or rss. No pay walls -- and here's a White House Summit story (POTUS meets with 100 college presidents—what's wrong with this picture besides everything?) to sub for the one pay-walled at the Chronicle.  

HE media recaps #CALconference

…in CHE/IHE…in case you missed live #socialmedia coverage, multiple twitter streams, Facebook coverage, SEIU's outstanding CAL Conference Storify (which gets my personal better reporting than usual media award) …now that the fat lady has not just sung but left the building …HE media tells us and the rest of higher ed what to think. It remains to be seen if mainstream media even notice Local 500's conference. Based on previous events, my guess would be that CAL conference organizer Anne McLeer, Adjunct Action's Mariah Quinn and the rest of their DC crew will not drop the ball on sending out press releases. One thing at a time: we'll get to those…

Monday Miscellany

... catch-up & preview touching on sundry topics from activism (#JunctTour & #AdjunctProject) to #CFHE's recent "gathering," blogging, links, Digital Identities & professional development. Briefly, I hope... 


#JunctTour (follow the hashtag) through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan (Detroit) tops my personal list even if highered media has not seen fit to give it due notice. I take that omission as a sign of their information deficit about the adjunctiverse, not mine. Filming partner and cinematographer, Chris LaBree (from the wilds of New Jersey), is video blogging the road trip, regular posts on 2255 Films. The Homeless Adjunct's road trip is and will be the ongoing lead on New Fac @ Facebook through May 26. 'Junct Rebellion's adjunct road trip has a Facebook Event page. 


The #AdjunctProject has made web site changes, is aggregating media references to the Project and also added a job board and forums to its site. Go check them out for yourself. I'd write more but am already having a hard time with "brief." Josh is going distributed networks: this deserves a post of its own... and will get one.

Adjuncts Strike Back

No empire just adjuncts, but there are a lot of us. This particular iteration of adjunct discontent may seem old news, displaced by another. Yes, perhaps so, but not the underlying conditions. Watch for Return of the Adjuncts ... perhaps coming soon to a campus near you.

Reactions to The Bidens’ tax returns stir adjunct discussion. The discontent ~ psychic pain might be more accurate ~ expressed here is more complex than it might appear at first.  It operates on multiple levels, not diffuse but directed at more than one specific target. 

Reading Room: College in the 21st century

Again Omnivore, the Book Forum blog for the omnivorous reader, presents yet another excellent collection of briefly annotated, (sometimes loosely) themed links, this set on higher education. Recent topics include war, learning from the Great Depression, northeast Asia, math, health care, the nature of messages (very loosely, almost whimsically themed) and endings ~ perhaps even more so. 


Education, especially higher, is a regular theme. Selections cut across scholarly, book reviews, academic and non-academic sources, social media and just social, economics, scholarly and less so topics, the subculture, its future and more. The tone, sources and perspective stand in stark contrast to Joe Berry's COCAL Updates. Taken together, with a Michael Meranze links post from Remaking the University thrown in for good measure: the highered beat as well and more thoroughly covered than by any major higher ed media.
