Today, April 13: Class Action Day

Several states saw actions today as part of the Class Action Day for Higher Education called for by the California Faculty Association and  which has spread to some extent in other areas. My thanks to Wes Strong of Defend Public Education for supplying this list and promising further reports and updates as he gets them.

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS ACTIONS

Actions on CSU campuses are sponsored by the California Faculty Association unless indicated otherwise.
All these actions will take place on Wednesday, April 13.

CSU BAKERSFIELD

11:30-1:30 pm "Tree of Knowledge" at the "Little Hill" (outdoors betw. Science II & Dorothy Donahoe Hall)

Rally and "New Orleans" funeral style march across the Chico State campus by faculty, students, and staff to deliver signed petitions.

Noon-1 pm Action at the Plaza outside box office, near Theater Arts
A Mock Trial will put "Politics as Usual," "Adminstrative Waste" and "Apathy" on trial. Preceded by Student, Faculty and Staff speakers, followed by a March.Contact: Diane Blair (559) 273-9078

CSU FULLERTON

9:30-10:15 am Sign making at the rally site
11 am-4 pm Teach-Ins, Rally & Action Tables In Quad in front of Humanities Building
7 pm with U. of Wisconsin union president Alex Hanna
8 pm Workshop: "Why Unions? Why Now?"
Daytime activities will take on a carnival-like atmosphere including informational teach-ins for faculty and students, a Speakers Corner to make calls to the chancellor and record video messages to him, collecting signatures on CSU Fullerton's "Declaration to Defend Public Education," a Students for Quality Education Soup Kitchen, and speakers. Rally and march to address changes in higher education because of the state budget and the CSU Chancellor's mismanagement. Speakers include U. Wisconsin union leader Alex Hanna, California Faculty Association President Lillian Taiz. Faculty, students and staff will gather to voice their support for prioritizing funding for student courses and bargaining a fair contract. Visuals will include a symbolic wall with hundreds of names of the SDSU community demanding Chancellor adhere to these principles.

Description: Action tables around campus. The faculty will build a "Knowledge Tree." Faculty members will write on leaves about the importance of higher education. Students will write messages about what budget cuts mean to them. The action coincides with Higher Education employee appreciation day. Sponsored by the AAUP (faculty) chapter on campus.

Description: PHENOM (statewide coalition) and the Massachusetts Society of Professors sponsors a "Call-In Day" at UMass Amherst to legislators about higher education funding, financial aid, and progressive revenue generation .

Description: Flash action teach-ins at the times/locations listed on creeping privatization of the public university as it is defunded by the state. "Teach CUNY Student/Faculty/Staff Summit—Our Working Conditions are our Students' Learning Conditions"
Description: BMCC faculty set aside the last week in March for Teach CUNY, a campus-wide effort to educate their students about the nature of the current fiscal crisis, the consequences for higher ed and alternatives to austerity. The week's actions will build toward a Student/Faculty/Staff summit focused on solidarity building and strategy for the budget and contract fight to come.

"We Are One" Rally
Description: The New York State United Teachers will mobilize teachers, students and community groups for a Times Square rally co-sponsored with the National Education Association, American Federation of Teachers, and the New York State AFL-CIO. Among them will be college and university faculty and staff from the Professional Staff Congress (City University of New York) and United University Professions (State University of New York).

OHIO

State University Campuses Across the State
"Ohio's March Against Madness"
April 9 on campuses, April 16 @ the State Capitol at noon
Description: A grassroots protest tournament of students, teachers, and workers to stop Ohio Gov. Kasich's attack on the middle class. The first round of protests was March 26 on 16 Ohio campuses. The largest rallies are the sites of Round Two on Sat. April 2 and Round Three on Sat. April 9.
The championship will be at the Statehouse on Saturday, April 16 at high noon, with everyone coming together to support their schools, fellow students, teachers, and Ohio.

"Rally at the Statehouse Against SB5"
Description: The Ohio AAUP Conference, a member of the One Ohio Now coalition, is organizing the faculty members to a rally at the Statehouse against SB5, a new law passed yesterday to take away collective bargaining rights from the faculty in public colleges and universities.

"Wannabe U: Inside the Corporate University"
U. of Connecticut professor Gaye Tuchman wrote "Wannabe U" as an ethnography of the typical state university of our era—one determined to rise in national ranking, obsessed with chasing status to the detriment of the faculty's lives and our students' educations. Tuchman helps uncover the changes happening right before our eyes as a step in determining what must be done to defend and save public higher education.
