Conferences Coming & Going: #LeftForum, #4C12, #SXSW, etc

A Rite of Spring Stravinsky would not recognize, conferences are how academics celebrate its coming. No excursions to Ft Lauderdale or other beaches.

March opened with NEA Higher Education Conference and AWP 2012, both in Chicago. Only the former participated in Occupy Chi / National  Day of Action for Education. L.A. followed with ACE 2012 annual meeting for higher ed administrators, university presidents and their ilk. Edu-geeks frolicked at SXSWedu in Austin, regular SXSW continues through March 19.  For the weekend the determined (perhaps demented) conference goer has CCCC in St Louis and Left Forum in NYC.

NYC, Left Forum, March 16-18. The 2012 schedule is online, good search function. Strong list of education related panels, including ones featuring Debra Leigh Scott and Joe Berry. Download the program.
A unique phenomenon in the U.S. and the world, Left Forum convenes the largest annual conference of a broad spectrum of left and progressive intellectuals, activists, academics, organizations and the interested public. Conference participants come together to engage a wide range of critical perspectives on the world, to discuss differences, commonalities, and alternatives to current predicaments, and to share ideas for understanding and transforming the world. The conference is held each spring in New York City.

Next comes the CCCC ConventionMarch21-24 in St Louis: follow #4C12 and @ncte_cccc on Twitter. On site registration still available: Full-time student $40; Part-time, adjunct faculty, or retired $115. Half-Day Workshops: $20; Full-Day Workshops: $40; and more. Full information on web page.

SXSW Inc. South by Southwest® (SXSW®) Conferences & Festivals

SXSWedu

March 4-8 , SXSWedu is in partnership with SXSW. On Facebook and Twitter, @sxswedu. OK so we missed this one but maybe next year. This is where the most commercial of the dreaded "disruptive innovations" hang out.

March 9-18, Austin X: Ultimate geek trade show / conference / festival series where original music, independent films, social media, education and emerging technologies converge. Yes, I said education, probably not the kind CFHE approves of.  Yes, big, that's a Texas thing. The PR runs, "Fostering creative and professional growth alike, SXSW is the premier destination for discovery." By all accounts, no exaggeration.

Extensive SXSW coverage from The Guardian

More about SXSW from Worst Professor:
No doubt more to come.  I hope to be kept apprised of dates as they come along. Maybe someone will even start maintaining a cross discipline calendar of conferences with sessions on precarious labor in the academic workplace. Making conference presentations and proceeding public and sharing them more widely would be another step in dismantling the Ivory Silos.
