Friends,
Tuesday, August 28, at 4:39 pm, two days into the fall semester, my college fired me without due process, claiming they were "rearranging my classes." My indentured servitude was not enough: they wanted me to bow down to their every whim. I would not.
They knew I could easily be replaced, and that's what they count on when they make us question our own integrity. They want us to be afraid. Last year, they took two of my classes away. They thought that would quiet me. This year, they threw me out completely, without notice, because I still dared to question them.

What my college — and with them, the world of higher education — did, especially once the semester had begun, was unethical and immoral. Not only do they exploit us by denying us living wages and healthcare, but they also deny us any sustainable livelihood and due process: we do not know from one day to the next if our paltry financial existence is safe. Help me fight them. If we don't, we are complicit in our own exploitation. We need to show them we are not afraid. So please take this letter, post it on every account you have and share it along with our petition. Working together, we can make it go viral.
Students, parents, educators—tenured and contingent workers alike, we are all one—don't let higher education get away with this blatant act against what is good and noble in our profession. We cannot let them win.

I rise with my red hair
And I eat men like air."
And I eat men like air."

Thanks for posting this Vanessa! Let's hope everyone signs and shares, so that we can continue on our cause. If my casualty helps that, then so be it. BTW, my name is spelled with only one "n": Ana Maria Fores Tamayo ;-)
ReplyDeleteI already knew that ~ that's why it's called a typo. @_@
ReplyDeleteBe advised that correcting the post will notchange how it displays on the NFM Facebook timeline. To do that I would have to delete and repost. That's not happening anytime soon. Tell you what, add an 'n' to my name or take out an 's' and we'll be even
