Ken Ryesky's email regarding submitting comments to IRS, :
Very heartening to know that the NFM intends to submit comments. The comments thus far submitted to the docket do have a respectable showing from Adjunct faculty, but we are not the only unhappy campers in the constituency. More Adjunct-oriented comments need to be weighed in. I am in the process of mentally conceptualizing my planned oral comments for the hearing on 23 April. Points that need to be made during the course of this rulemaking proceeding include, but are not necessarily limited to: (A) How academia treats its Adjuncts, and what drives academia in doing so. Some exemplars certainly cannot hurt (e.g., the Weber State affair, the Queensborough CUNY English Adjuncts affair, the failure of various CUNY schools to properly get their Adjuncts onto the payroll during the Fall 2012 semester come immediately to my own mind). (B) The teaching process begins before the first day of the semester, and does not end when the Final Exam papers are collected.
(C) Adjuncts, like FTs, need to keep abreast of ongoing developments in their fields [as a tax attorney, I believe this to be a point that can be easily appreciated by the IRS people if packaged correctly.]. (D) [What I envision as for my planned oral comments]: In addition to painting a picture of academia's treatment and mistreatment of Adjunct faculty (the "WHAT"), a case also needs to be made as to the relevance of such to the rulemaking proceeding at hand (the "WHY"). We need to tell the IRS people WHY the Adjunct situation matters. This is the perspective I will seek to address. Let me know if I can be of any help to you in propounding your comments. -- Ken Ryesky
