The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, observed in November, is a day to promote women's rights at work and to call for the prevention of violence against all women and girls. Education International is convinced that quality free public education for all will ensure that girls and women have the chance to not only achieve literacy, but to also become empowered so they can lead their lives free of the fear of violence.

Philippines: EI launches urgent action appeal

South Korea: Outrage over union's de-registration
The President and General Secretary of Education International, Susan Hopgood and Fred van Leeuwen, have told the members of the Environment and Labour Committee of the National Assembly of Korea that the recent de-registration of the Korea Teachers' and Education Workers' Union (KTU), one of EI's affiliates in the country, is in violation with international labour standards. The de-registration follows KTU's refusal to comply with the government's ruling that dismissed and retired teachers cannot be union members. >>>>>

In his statement at the 37th General Conference of UNESCO, held in Paris, France, EI General Secretary Fred van Leeuwen has called for a renewed commitment for universal free quality education to be at the centre of the new global development agenda. >>>>>

Georgia: national campaign for quality education
The Educators and Scientists' Free Trade Union of Georgia (ESFTUG), one of EI's national affiliates, launched on 5 October, World Teachers' Day, a teacher-led campaign for quality education entitled Preserve the Past, Spotlight on Present for Better Future. The trade union linked its campaign aiming at raising the Georgian teachers' voices together at national level to the EI Global Initiative, Unite for Quality Education: better education for a better world. >>>>>

Argentina: Call for free lay and egalitarian sex education
EI's affiliate in Argentina, the Confederación de Trabajadores de la Educación de la República Argentina (CTERA), supported the theme of the XXII March for Pride in Sexual Diversity: "Free lay and egalitarian sex education"; the march proceeded from the Plaza de Mayo to the Plaza del Congreso in Buenos Aires on 9 November. >>>>>
