Texas @MoveOn…@AFLCIO…@AnaMFores vs @ALEC + a few petitions more

…so what is ALEC doing in Texas? Annual meeting...even they have them too, so it stands to reason that Texas MoveOn takes aim at ALECTexas AFL-CIO takes on ALEC too, as well every labor and activist/progressive group in the state...but not without Adjunct Justice.

...and petitions (because...)

To the Texas State House, The Texas State Senate, and Governor Rick Perry
We the undersigned, citizens of the state of Texas, demand that you, our elected public servants, drop your memberships in the anti-democratic, American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), and pledge to never join or be affiliated with ALEC in the future.
The American Legislative Exchange Council is an organization consisting of global corporate interests and state legislators that collaborate secretly to draft thousands of model bills that are then introduced simultaneously in state capitols throughout the country.
Some ALEC bills you may recognize:
  • "Stand Your Ground Laws," promoted by the NRA;
  • "Right to Work Legislation" supported by the Koch Brothers and other corporate interests, designed to kill living wages and public pensions;
  • voter ID laws to kill democracy;
  • bills to kill meaningful healthcare reform;
  • the Parental Choice Scholarship Act that promotes vouchers and sends our tax dollars to for-profit schools and phony online degree programs.
According to Progress Texas, out of 181 state legislators, at least 35 have known ALEC ties. It’s well past time to stop the flow of dirty money into our state legislatures. We must demand our elected officials stop subverting democracy and drop their memberships in ALEC. Let’s have government of, by, and for the people once again.
To be delivered to Larry Page, Google CEO. The anti-environment, anti-education and anti-worker agenda of ALEC (the American Legislative Exchange Council) is the antithesis of what Google claims to stand for. Please end your support for ALEC and its extremist policies today
PETITION BACKGROUND
As a teacher in Arizona, I've witnessed ALEC's dangerous agenda firsthand. The group has repeatedly tried to dismantle our public schools by rerouting taxpayer funds toward private and for-profit institutions, attacking the reduced price school lunch program and attempting an end-run around teachers' unions.
On top of that, it's repeatedly pushed voter suppression efforts, discouraged policies that would expand alternative energy use and promoted the dangerous "Stand Your Ground" law.
Google has a great reputation and I couldn't be happier about the recent investments my school made to bring tools like Chrome and Google Docs to my students - but that also makes Google's involvement with ALEC even more disappointing.
So have you done today to fight injustice, make a difference, do the the right thing? PS trying to bully people you don't agree with, doesn't count....
