A call for public #adjunct discussion of #COCAL_Updates + Sunday Matinee

…because reactions to "adios Updates" post are not landing in comments on blog post or social media. Although about making resources public and open, comments and discussion have not been. Likewise, the original notice ("...in addition to Joe Berry’s regular COCAL updates"), posted publicly went without comment.

On Facebook, discussion appears to be 100% backchannel via pm and closed group -- or groups. Elsewhere, I have no idea, but transparency and open discussion would be more productive. So I'm working on an "Updates Update" Precarity Dispatches post to clarify and (I hope) encourage open discussion, even volunteers for a collaborative Updates Archive Project

#ProtestU is Global—@AmerQuarterly on angry Latin American #students

Student frustration over the neoliberal assault on higher education is not just a U.S. or even North American (e.g. tri-national COCAL) phenomenon..According to New Americas Quarterly, "Latin America's students are angry—and getting angrier." The International Students Movement connects students on both sides of the pond. Casualized academic labor is moving in this direction too but still has a long way to way to go.
Millions of students have taken to the streets across Latin America in recent years in protests that reflect an unprecedentedly broad mobilization of popular opinion.

links & tweeps for #COCALXI opening sessions

I'm still working on the Twitter list for following online…in the meantime check out the few I have below and on Facebook. Following #COCALXI on twitter is still the best way to keep up.

Plenary panelists like +Sylvain Marois may be too busy to tweet. So far, the most active tweeps are +Krista Eliot+Lee Kottner, @AFTHigherEd and @SylviaJMarques. @AAUP and Margot Young for @cupepse have joined the conversation. Chronicle Vitae columnist +Sydni Dunn is less active but will no doubt be posting articles. Either tweets from Interest Group sessions are thinner or missing identifying tags.

Back channel tweets and email are harder to track, but we welcome those too ~ anon if preferred. DM @VCVaile or @precariousfac or email vanessa.87036@gmail.com. A few disconcerting accounts of rumor mongering are emerging too but on hold awaiting confirmation.

Sunday Matinee: Horse Feathers

the pre-COCAL XI video series opened with a double feature: the powerful introduction to BarbaraWolf's video-book, A Simple Matter of Justice, and Bonzo Goes to College. How else to end the series with than the Marx Brothers' college movie, Horse Feathers?

I could, maybe should, begin or end with some appropriately serious about both COCAL, the conference and #altCOCAL. They can wait. Just posting Sean's #altCOCAL/#altPSC update and a COCAL Updates double header should more than suffice.

After the movie you can check out the COCAL links or not ~ if you are still in a college movie mood, there's Boston.com's 50 Best College Movies for ideas (if nothing else you might get some insights on where the public gets its ideas about what college, students and profs are like. A definite let down after Horse Feathers. BC's Top 20 - Readers Picks is better but still wanting. If you can stand it, there's even a list of "all college movies". Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts) is the only adjunct movie I know of.

Now let the horse feathers fly...

Sunday Matinee: A Simple Matter of Justice, Afterword at COCAL IV

San Jose City College, founded in 1921, is a community college located in the city of San Jose, Santa Clara County, California. San Jose City College was originally called San Jose Junior College and operated in downtown San Jose, California. San Jose Unified School District took over the College’s operation in 1953, moving it to its present 2100 Moorpark Avenue location, overlooking Interstate 280. The name changed to San Jose City College in 1958..
January 12-14, 2001, CPFA and San Jose City College hosted COCAL IV

Each Chapter of A Simple Matter of Justice focused on the barriers, opportunities and organizing approaches being undertaken in a different situation. The video-book’s Afterword, taped at COCAL IV in San Jose, CA, demonstrates the value of an international-scale coalition/organization to increase the effectiveness, reach and resolve of contingent faculty.

Sunday Matinee: "Degrees of Shame"

Today is another movie day on the blog ~ BYOP(opcorn). Leading up to #cocalXI ~ or #altCOCAL, even both, depending on your inclinations (but that's another post), the current Sunday Matinee series focuses on Barbara Wolf's films about adjunct academic labor, which have been closely associated with COCAL since the first Campus Equity Week in 2001, where Degrees of Shame: Part-time Faculty: Migrant Workers of the Information Economy was shown in Chicago (and became a CEW staple). The afterword to A Simple Matter of Justice was taped at COCAL IV in San Jose, CA. In the picture to the the right, Barbara Wolf is handing out flyers in Chicago.

See also Barbara Wolf's bio and other posts in the series. Barring the unforeseen, next Sunday's Matinee will be that very San Jose afterword and more links, of course...now, Degrees of Shame

Sunday Matinee: Chs 4 & 5: Organizing Boston & California

Barbara Wolf, Workplace 4.2
#adjunct organizing is A Simple Matter of Justice (Barbara Wolf, 2001). This Sunday's videos examine two noted cases and still relevant organizing models for regional and state, respectively.

Each Chapter focuses on the barriers, opportunities and organizing approaches being undertaken in a different situation. For example, Boston part-timers, through COCAL-Boston, are organizing on a regional basis because of the vast number of schools there, which may be the first US example of "metro strategy" later described by Joe Berry in Reclaiming the Ivory Tower

California community college part-time faculty, CPFA (California Part Time Faculty Association), are shown organizing statewide to change state laws. Sadly, the Boston page is gone, leaving no more than a a description in a Kairos article and dead link to a no longer existing website. The last Wayback Machine snapshot was May 1, 2003.  CPFA is still going strong: website, discussion list, quarterly journal, blog, Twitter, etc

Links from the #KeithHoeller Collection, 2004-2010

…more recent ones are in the collection too but revisiting earlier articles seems in order. Some may be thinking of Keith's work just in terms of posts on the adj-l listserv, an occasional article and now his book, Equality for Contingent Faculty. There is actually a substantial body of work extending back 20 years or so.

Otherwise, too much is happening in the adjunctiverse to cover in depth right here and now. Besides, today is Sunday, and I already blogged two big, fat news aggregation posts, a Mayday wrap on #mobilize4equity and one on the still ongoing City College of San Francisco saga for COCAL Updates — feeds for both now on the page too. If that's not enough, a super guest post from Adjunct Justice's Ana M Fores (aka the better pay petition lady) is coming your way.

Elsewhere on the adjunct event horizon, Frank Reiser and the rest of the Nassau CC adjunct "old guard" had a reprieve and are still news. Expect letter writing reminders! New Mexico higher ed is in the news too: not UNM, the state flagship U or CNM, super-sized vo-tech turned community college (the largest in the state), but NNMCNorthern New Mexico College. Miranda Merklein, who teaches there and at will be blogging NM at Fugitive Faculty. It's on my list too, and a social media push is taking shape. Enough rambling…now for Keith Hoeller's links (which may become a permanent collection in the Reading Room)

CFHE Conference January, 2014…

The CFHE Conference in Manhattan, hosted by PSC CUNY, was fantastic and a great success. The PSC staff went out of their way to accommodate the over 100 attendees, and Mike Fabricant ran the tightest, yet most informative and collaborative, conference possible. I am sure I speak for all attendees when I offer a resounding THANK YOU!

The conference began Friday evening with a unique dinner featuring tastes from all over the world and a comprehensive discussion of the accreditation battle at City College of San Francisco. It is amazing how corrupt an accreditation board can be.

Saturday morning began with a panel discussion on 'Effective Higher Ed Campaigns'.

Cultural Logic has been online since 1997 and is a non-profit, peer-reviewed, open access, interdisciplinary journal publishing essays, interviews, poetry, and reviews by writers working within the Marxist tradition

This is the second collaboration between the two journals.

COCAL Updates August 8

Joe Berry writes,

unam01I am now leaving for COCAL X in Mexico City and may or may not have sufficient time and internet access to send out another COCAL Update before I return to the US August 21. If not, have a good remainder of your summer and and excellent start of the school year, for all those who start early.
Three notes of self promotion: My partner Helena Worthen and I have written three articles that have recently appeared or are about to appear that should be of interest to this list. (photo, UNAM by David Milroy)

If any readers would like copies of these articles emailed to you when the final versions become available, just drop me an email. In solidarity.
In addition to Joe Berry, other New Faculty Majority members attending include David Milroy for CFA and NFM board members Judy Olson, Jack Longmate and Steve Street. All are now in Mexico City. I promise to do my utmost at harrying them for reports to share with you.

Updates in brief and links

Grad unions active while awaiting NLRB ruling on their right to unionize under NLRA

Cyber learning and the for-profits

A Philly PA area  adjunct deals with cancer while teaching up to 7 classes.

Good blog post on workplace issues by Cory Robin, a TT prof in CA and formerly a leader of the Yale grad union and author of the great book, "FEAR, the history of a political idea" which has a wonderful chapter on fear as a factor in the workplace, drawn largely from his Yale experiences.

Chicago, Chicago...
Chicago teachers show mobilization and real strike threat can win, but fight and strike prep continues.

Good story out of Chicago Reader on how Mayor Emanuel and Mitt Romney have the same education program and why (and Obama too). It also makes very clear why we need to support the Chicago Teachers Union as much as possible in their fight to preserve public education in Chicago and nationally. Monday rambles: NFM pit crew & other notes, COCAL. protests

As you may have noticed, board member and blogger (here and on Cringing Liberal Elite) Alan Trevithick has joined our NFM Facebook pit crew. Now to find the perfect NASCAR gear for him. Matt and Maria are on too but may not be as active. No gear for them.

Tomorrow is a NFM board meeting / conference call 11am EDT. If  anyone has last minute questions, email or post them as comments. Mostly, it's a catch up meeting, reports, structural/admin items. Tomorrow there will board news to announce. Now there is Foundation news: 501(3c) status approved. Member Forums will launch soon on the main site. We are also working on a membership drive. Since it's still in the formative stage, we'll asked for your opinions, ideas and reactions. Then expect to be reading a lot about that here and on our social media network. You may even come to think of the drive as needing a leash law. Why a membership drive? Easy. The stronger our membership base the more we can accomplish.

Updates in brief and links

Around the Adjunctiverse...

Adjunct fired at Texas A&M (Daily Mail, UK), a public university, as indirect result of objecting to cross displayed on top of university building (e.g. files complaint with ACLU that leads to removal of crosses and subsequent email threats that administration does not act on but reacts by taking away her fall courses for speaking out), as recently reported in Crosses, Threats and an Adjunct by Scott Jaschik (Inside HigherEd). See also Seth Kahn's impressive letter to San Antonio Texas A&M administration (Adjunct Project). Breaking update: she is now in communication with The Fire, which took an immediate interest in the case.
